How It Works
Canada Starts is a newly-established $200,000 grant fund to help Canadian entrepreneurs start their business. Individual grants of up to $5,000 each will be awarded to eligible new businesses across Canada. The fund is a joint project from Ownr by RBC Ventures, Staples, Shopify, and Moneris.
- You are a Canadian resident
- You are at least the legal of age of majority in your province or territory of residence
- You are an aspiring entrepreneur with a great idea for a business in Canada.
- You must not be a director of an incorporated company or otherwise be operating your own business in Canada as of September 1, 2020.
The application and selection process involves two phases. All successful applicants must meet the evaluation criteria of both phases in order to receive the full $5,000 grant.
In Phase One, applicants must provide their business idea/concept, how the grant funding will be used, a copy of their business plan, and contact details.
Successful applicants of Phase One will receive $2,500 in grant funding and will be asked to demonstrate that they have established an online presence for their business (i.e business website, social media presence for the business, and/or Google MyBusiness Page) and proof that they have registered a business name (either provincially or federally) in Phase Two in order to be eligible to receive the second tranche of $2,500 in grant funding.
Applications will be assessed on the basis of specific evaluation criteria in Phase One, including the quality of responses and thoroughness of their business plan. Check out this guide on how to write a business plan. Successful applicants of Phase Two will be assessed on the basis of whether they have established an online presence for their business (i.e business website, social media presence for the business, and/or Google MyBusiness Page) and proof that they have registered a business name (either provincially or federally).
Successful applicants will be contacted by November 1, 2020 to arrange for initial payment of $2,500. The remaining $2,500 will be provided by February 1, 2021 following the successful submission of a follow-up application in Phase Two.
